Logan airport is the gateway for flights into the New England region of the United States, and is located in East Boston - very close to downtown Boston, which is only a bridge or tunnel ride away. The Boston Airport has been open since June 1923, when the first U.S. Mail flight landed at what was then known as Boston airport. The airfield was primarily used by the Massachusetts Air Guard and Army Air Corp. The first commercial hanger was completed in 1925, and the first passenger flights were in 1927. The Boston Airport was expanded over the years, and renamed General Edward Lawrence Logan Airport in 1943.
Although General Edward Lawrence Logan reportedly never flew, he served in the Mass House of Representitives, he was chairman of the MDC (Metropolitan Disctrict Commission) and a judge in the South Boston courts. He entered the military in 1897 with the Mass volunteer Militia, and retired as Lt. General in 1928. The Massachusetts Port Authority now runs Logan Airport, since 1956, MASSPORT also runs the Tobin Bridge, and shipping Port. Today Logan continues to expand, and served approximately 23 million passengers annually.
